Mother’s Day Brunch / Tea Party Theme

My mother’s birthday always falls on or right near Mother’s Day so we always have an extra special celebration for her. She loves the whole tea party concept and we are doing in now for the third year in a row!  It’s always fun to have the girls together, we wear our pretty sundresses and of complete with a fancy hat.  Some tips I have learned from doing a tea party lunch the past few years:

  • Send out a nice hand written invitation (it’s always more special and personal to send via mail than email)
  • Purchase pretty pastel cloth table linens (table cloth, cloth napkins, rings)
  • Flowers, flowers and more flowers!
  • Have a gorgeous centrepiece
  • Name cards for the table
  • Pretty plates, tea cups and tea pots
  • Nice set of silverware (not plastic ware)
  • Just make it all incredibly gorgeous and FUN!
  • Oh and lastly…a variety of tea, tea sandwiches and desserts (and lemonade too!)

(My secret: you don’t have to spend alot of $$$ to make things beautiful for your party.  I purchased most things at Ross Dress for Less Marshall’s and TJ Max.  Michael’s or WalMart for the flowers. Dollar Stores too!)

This year our menu is the following:

In the Kitchen Tonight: Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Jam Cookie Bars

My hubby loves peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (as you can tell, he is my inspiration for many desserts since he is the one who eats them!)  So I came across this delicious recipe from Pillsbury for Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Jam Cookie Bars– which my official taste tester (aka hubby) gave a HUGE thumbs up too.  He also immediately ran to the kitchen to pour himself a tall glass of milk afterwards too.  This dessert is very rich in flavor and yummy in taste.  If you are a kid at heart (like hubby) and love your pb&j sandwiches…this dessert is for you!

Starting off with the basic ingredients. I used grape jam.

Pressed the sugar cookie dough onto the bottom of the pan

Layer with peanut butter

Grape Jam Layer

Sprinkle chocolate chip morsels

Add cookie dough for top layer

Fresh out of the oven

Ready to eat (and with a glass of milk, of course!)

In the Kitchen Tonight: Wedding Cookies

Today was a happy day.  Got to witness two of the most amazing people in the world unite in marriage and be a part of the happy wedding festivities (congratulations Brandon and Rachel!).  I was also tasked with making the cookies… here are the pictures of the cookies platters and the yummy recipes for Snickerdoodles, Peanut Butter Cookies*, Russian Tea Cakes* and Sugar Cookies*.

*For the Russian Tea Cakes, I used Pecans for the nuts

*For the Peanut Butter Cookies, I added regular salted peanuts to some of the batches

*For the Sugar Cookies, used a heart-shaped cookie cutter, Betty Crocker Frosting in several flavors (white, yellow and pink) and white/silver sparkly cookie/cupcakes decor
